Denali Seed Company sells open pollenated,
heirloom, and hybrid seed varieties grown either by traditional
or organic methods. All certified organic seed sold is identified as grown
by organic methods in the seed description and on the seed packet. Certified
organic seed includes open pollenated, heirloom and hybrid varieties.
Open pollinated varieties are varieties where both the male
and female parents are the same variety, usually the male and female parts
of the blossom are on the same plant which cross pollinate to produce seed
that in turn will produce plants nearly identical to the parent plant. Heirloom
varieties are open pollinated varieties that have been grown by gardeners
for a very long time, usually since sometime in the 1800's. Seed collected
from both heirloom and open pollinated varieties produce
plants nearly identical to the parent plants. A hybrid variety is a cross
between two different varieties, one variety produces the male parent plant
and the other variety the female parent plant which cross pollinate by natural
means to produce seed. The seed produced from this cross is a new hybrid variety
that has the best characteristics of both parent varieties and is more vigorous
than either variety, giving it many qualities that make it superior to the
older standards. The seed produced on hybrid
plants will not grow plants identical to the plants produced from seed in
the original cross, therefore the seed is not usually saved.
