Notes From the President

The seed varieties for sale by the Denali Seed Company have been tested in Alaska to assure our customers that these varieties will perform well under arctic and sub-arctic growing conditions. All the seed varieties in our collection will mature in most locations in Alaskan when planted immediately after the last frost, which in most areas is around the first of June.
The test trials for our varieties are conducted by the University of Alaska at its Agricultural Research Stations in Fairbanks and Palmer and by the Denali Seed Company in selected gardens throughout Alaska.

At Denali Seed, we rate our varieties a little differently than most seed companies. Most ratings tell you the number of days to harvest but growing conditions in Alaska are different than in other parts of the country because of the long summer days and cool soils so the traditional ratings are not relevant when gardening in Alaska. What we've done is rate our varieties according to their maturity in Alaska and rate them as first early, early, mid season or late when grown in Alaska. These ratings are used throughout this guide. We've tested our varieties in cold soils, under cool nights and during long summer days. We feel that our method gives the Alaskan gardner useful information they won't find anywhere else.

Our varieties are tested and chosen for their performance under Alaska's long days and cool soils and our selections and recommendations are made without reguard to their being open pollinated, heirloom or hybrid varieties. All hybrid varieties in our collection are identified in their variety descriptions and all other varieties are open pollinated varieties.
A hybrid variety is a variety that has two different male and female parents which cross pollinate and grow and produce seed naturally. The resulting new variety has best characteristics from both parents and more vigorous than either parent. Open pollinated varieties have the same male and female parents which cross pollinate to produce identical offspring. Heirloom varieties are open pollinated varieties that have been grown by gardners a very long time usually since the 1800's. Denali Seed does not sell genetically modified varieties commonly refered to as GMO's.
Our garden seed is always field-fresh, and at Denali we go to great lengths to assure our customers the best quality available. The seed for our Alaska proven varieties are grown on farms in several western states and imported from comparable cool regions of northern Europe.
The genetic qualities for our varieties remain unchanged even when the seed is grown in a warmer climate.
Because seed crops are subject to many conditions of nature and events beyond our control, at times some of the varieties listed will not be available.

The quantity of seed in our seed packets will be enough to plant the average home garden. If you intend to do a lot of canning or freezing, more than one seed packet may be needed.

Thank you for choosing varieties from Denali Seed Company! We appreciate your business and will continue to supply the quality seed your deserve as we have for over 30 years.

The wonderfully flavored unshelled pods, which are stringless, brittle, and succulent, are a mainstay in any stir fry. Edible podded peas like cool weather and produce continuous yields of large flat pods until the first frost. This variety produces vigorous 28-inch vines that don't need trellising and produce a high yield of 2 pods per cluster. Peas thrive in the moist cool weather found in Alaska.
